Violent Streak

Dear Trainer,

I have a 4 year old black lab mix. She has developed a real violent streak with other dogs… it’s unpredictable. One minute she’s fine, the next, she attacks my girlfriend’s dog.

My girlfriend and I live together, and, as a result of the aggressive nature, I had to give my dog to my mother. I miss her, but she is so violent with other dogs that I’m afraid one of them will kill the other. When she fights, she won’t stop unless I jump in the middle of it & physically pull the dogs apart.

 What to do?

Dear What,

Once dogs start fighting in this manner, it's very hard to break it or trust them with other dogs. The attacks may not be unprovoked, but the provocation may be so minimal that you don't even notice it. I would recommend you try some calming products, like Calm Eze, etc.

You might also check into changing her food to a low protein diet as this can produce some dramatic effects. Also putting a leash on the dog in the house with the other dog and controlling her behavior and movements may help. A muzzle can be helpful with this.

Good luck and keep us posted,
Lisa
