Fear of Lightning and Fireworks
Dear Trainer,
I have a 7 year old weimaraner that completely wigs out during thunderstorms and fireworks if she's alone. By wigs out, I mean, she goes in the closet and pulls everything off the shelves, and eats the shelves...not the clothes or the shoes, but the shelves! To the point that she makes her mouth or her nose bleed.
Some may suggest a simple solution such as closing the door, but she'll claw the door if I do that. I have fan that I leave on in hopes of muting the thunder but it doesn't stop her. Also, she NEVER has been one to urinate or defecate inside the house but she's doing it now during the storms.
Any advice you offer is greatly appreciated!
Sherri
Dear Sherrie,
There are natural calming products that help relieve the stress of storms. Also a new product on the market is a stress wrap, they are having a lot of good results with it. I could special order one for you if you're interested.
Unfortunately, some dogs get very upset with storms, and we get a lot here in Florida. Can you crate her? Often a crate which is covered by blanket or something will make your pet feel safe and protect them from hurting themselves.
Hope this helps.
Good luck, Lisa
