Hi Lisa
We have a 2 year old male lab, approximately 110lbs. He is very lovable and really thinks he is a lap size puppy. Around us he is very playful and loves to give kisses.
I took him camping and he was around my 4 year old nephew. He snapped at him catching his nose. Thank goodness he did not cause a serious injury. My nephew only tried to pet him. I took him into another room and my nerves were shot the whole weekend.
About 2 weeks ago a friend of my neighbor stopped by. My Lab was on the deck. When the girl stepped onto the deck he began to bark at her very loudly and stepped towards her. I feared that he would also snap at her to bite. This behavior is unacceptable but I don’t really know how to correct it. Can you please help.
Annette
Dear Annette,
This is a very serious problem. If he wasn't properly socialized with kids at an early age, he could be afraid of them. Kids move very fast and have high pitched voices which can frighten dogs. If he is still intact, this could be part of the problem also.
I would recommend you work one on one with a trainer. It sounds as if you're already nervous with kids and he will pick this up and think there is something wrong.
If you would like to call me, I might be of more help,
Lisa
