Chewing & Chewing & Chewing

Hello,

I have a golden retriever. She's 6 months old and I can't get her to stop chewing things up and taking things outside, such as my shoes, socks and tv controllers.

Hope you can help me.

Thanks, Sue

Hi Sue,

Regards to your golden, she's still very much a pup. You want to be sure she has plenty of appropriate chew toys, and is confined when left alone. A great product, bitter apple will help with the destructive behavior.

Golden's love to carry things around. That's why it's said they have soft mouths, they can learn to be very gentle. Work with the out/drop command, use treats to teach her to give you things. Insist at sitting at the door before being let out, this will give you time to get her to drop what she has before going outside. If you're using a doggie door, you'll have to monitor her.

She's also going for things that have your scent strong. You might have to puppy proof house for a while, meaning anything that is in reach should be put up. Work with her toys. When she has something inappropriate, take it away, give her a toy and lavish praise.

Hope this helps, bring her in to the store to meet us. Good luck,

Lisa
