Barking Chihuahua
Lisa:
I need help! I have two small dogs, one full bred Chihuahua, the other a very friendly mixed Chihuahua/poodle/dachshund. They run the house! I have never been very good at training although Lulu the Chihuahua is extremely smart!
The problem, she barks like crazy whenever any one comes to the house and just recently has bit my ex-husband's new wife in the rear! (I was not in the room at the time) What is the best way to handle her when people come over?
Thank you,
Patti
Hi Patti,
First off, the best thing is to put a leash on her in the house. When she first barks, thank her and tell her enough. We want to praise the first bark, but release her of her duties of guarding you and the house.
If she continues barking, she should be verbally reprimanded. Also she should know how to sit, so have her sit and stay at this time.
Small dogs are usually afraid of visitors, have your company sit and give her a very yummy treat. If she shy away, don't let them push, you want her to approach for the treat.
Good luck, and keep me posted.
Lisa
